Applications
Applications must be completed and tournament fees paid in full by adjournment of the mandatory Captain's Briefing meeting held the Friday evening before the tournament. The Tournament Committee reserves the right to refuse entry to any person, boat or team. No refunds will be made after adjourment of the meeting. Entry fees will be accepted on the day of the Captain's Briefing meeting prior to the start of the meeting.

Registration/Briefing
All teams must register via captain or represtative between 4:00pm and 6:00pm on the day of the Captain's Briefing meeting, and at least one representative of each boat must be in attendance at the meeting. This is the time to learn the rules and understand what to do, and also ask questions. Failure of a team to have a representative present at the meeting may result in a disqualification with no refund given to that team.

Fishing Area
Fishing will begin from Maunalua Bay in Hawaii Kai. Fishing during the tournament will be confined to the grid area only. A copy of the grid is in the Captain's Bag. Any participating boat fishing outside the grid area during the tournament will be automatically disqualified from the tournament, along with any previous catch made. The grid area may be reduced to the small craft warning radius if announced by the tournament committee prior to the start of each fishing day. (Alternate fishing day scheduled for Sunday, July 31, 2005)

Start Boat/Stop Boat/Check-In
All boats will be required to check in with start boat which will be located at the head buoy. Boats should proceed to the start boat located at the Ewa end of the start area, which is the green entrance buoy. Pass close to the start boat at no-wake speed and display your team number card. Be sure you get an acknowledgement from the start boat. Radio check-in with SHACK BASE is not necessary except for radio check. Stop fishing at 4:00pm. You must be back at the head buoy by 6:00pm to qualify any catch. Stop boat will be located at the head buoy.

Fishing Rules
This tournament is considered jungle rules format. There are no restrictions on line class, length of leader, etc., but anglers must fight the fish in a sporting manner once hooked. Fish must be caught by the use of artificial lures ONLY. Teasers and Birds are allowed in conjuction with the lure.

Mutilation
We have modified this rule to accommodate local custom on the care of fish. If the fish is marked by gunshot, prop mark, shark bite, or other exterior blemish, the fish will be considered mutilated and will be disqualified. If the fish is brought aboard and bled as a means to preserve the meat for consumption, the fish will count.

FYI: Potential world records cannot be considered unless a team angles their fish under 100% IGFA rules and submits all gear to the tournament committee for measurement and compliance. Any gear on board the vessel that does not meet IGFA specifications could invalidate a claim for a world record, and the IGFA will disqualify a fish if ANY mutilation is observed (regardless of tournament rules). If you have any intention of submitting claim for a record, we recommend you familiarize yourself with IGFA rules and remove all non-conforming gear prior to the start of fishing.

Weighing and Judging
All fish must be reported to SHACK BASE as soon as any member of the team recognizes a fish is hooked. This requirement is absolutely mandatory. Any fish brought to the scales without calling it in at the time it is identified on the line will not count - NO exceptions will be made.

You will be expected to report your catch during radio round-ups. If your radio does not work, call another boat on a cell phone, and have the report relayed to SHACK BASE.

See radio instructions for further information on radio check-ins. Please do not call SHACK BASE on the phone during round-ups or the radio silence period.

Each landed fish must be weighed on the day caught at the official weight scale. Fish hooked and acknowledged by SHACK BASE prior to the stop fishing call at 4:00pm may be fought until lost, or taken, so long as the boat hooking the fish remains in constant communication with SHACK BASE and in at the head buoy by 6:00pm.

The following fish, with NO MINIMUM WEIGHTS, will be considered for qualification:

  • MARLIN (Black, Blue, Stripe)
  • AHI/SHIBI
  • MAHIMAHI
  • ONO

Ties
In the event of a tie between two weighted fish, the first fish weighed in WINS.

RADIO INSTRUCTIONS

General
The call sign for the Base Radio will be SHACK BASE. All boats in the tournament will use their team number and boat name for identification.

Contact People: Brendan Burchfiel @ 479-0020

Radio Channels
VHF channel 85 will be used for primary communications. You may also use a cellular phone to contact SHACK BASE at 396-0476 EXCEPT DURING ROUND-UPS. CB channel 34 may be used, but range is limited and catch reports may or may not be repeated on CB. All boats should be equipped with VHF radio and one other form of communication for your own safety.

Time
The official time for all tournament fuctions during fishing will be the time kept at SHACK BASE. It will approximate GPS time. If verification of the time is required, verify it with SHACK BASE.

Round-Up
Round-ups will be held at 10:00am and 2:00pm on fishing day. Fish boated before round-up times may be reported to SHACK BASE but must be reported again and acknowleged at round-up. At each round-up, all boats will report accurately their fishing activity for the period just passed. Information Must be transmitted over the radio. If you cannot reach SHACK BASE via VHF or CB, call 396-0476 SHACK BASE to arrange for a relay. Weigh-in slips and fish data are initiated with the information that you supply during the hook-ups and round-ups. When your team number is called, be prepared to transmit the following information:

  1. Your team number
  2. The grid area you are reporting from
  3. Number of strikes
  4. Number of fish boated
  5. Species and estimated weight of fish boated
  6. The grid area that the fish was caught
  7. The angler(s) who caught the fish
(example: Team 99, area GOLF, 0-0-1, Ono, 35 lbs., caught in foxtrot, angler #5)

Other Reports
For any fish to qualify, it must be reported hooked-up and acknowledged by SHACK BASE prior to 4:00pm on that fishing day. If you hook-up or boat a fish and you can't get through to SHACK BASE, you can relay your time of hook-up or fish boated and fishing area through other boats. The relaying boat must get acknowledgement from SHACK BASE. Failure to follow this procedure may result in disqualification of the fish.

Silent Period
During the last 15 minutes of the fishing day, all tournament boats will remain off the SHACK BASE channels unless you are reporting a hook-up, a fish boated, or you have an emergency.

After Stop Fishing
All boats must remain in radio contact with SHACK BASE while at sea after 4:00pm so we may stay apprised of your status. If you are fighting a fish after 4:00pm, call SHACK BASE when the fish is boated or lost and give your ETA for arrival in port.

Securing in Port
All boats must report secure in harbor prior to 6:00pm to SHACK BASE. You secure by radio, telephone, or in person. Failure to acknowledge secure by SHACK BASE may result in disqualification. (SHACK BASE #396-0476)

Weighing your fish does not constitute securing. You must either radio or personally secure with SHACK BASE. Please remember that reporting secure is a very important safety procedure. If you do not report secure, the tournament committee will assume you are still out on the water and will go looking for you as if you are in trouble. Please don't make us do that if you are really safe at home.
